Meet Our Experts

Elmarie Neilson

Attorney

Elmarie Neilson was admitted as an attorney in 1988 and has decades of experience as an Attorney. She specialises in Matrimonial, Family law, Adoptions and related litigation.

She is also qualified to appear in the High Court the same as an advocate.

She also has extensive experience in Deceased Estates, Wills and Trusts.

Elmarie Neilson is a fully trained and qualified Mediator and Parent Co-Ordinator, providing mediation in divorces, commercial disputes and estate disputes.

She co-authored an academic textbook on Forensic Psychology published by Juta in 2020.

Elmarie is a founder member and chairperson of the National Association of Collaborative Practitioners, an organisation that is working to introduce collaborative law in South Africa.

She is also a political activist and serves on the Federal Legal Commission of the DA.

Vanessa Thomas

Associate

Vanessa was in the freight industry for many years before pursuing a career in law. She joined Neilsons Attorneys as a candidate attorney in 2013 and successfully completed her LLB degree in 2017.

Vanessa was admitted as an attorney in 2018 and was admitted as a notary and conveyancer in 2019.

Vanessa enjoys the great outdoors and is a coffee aficionado.

Tom Blyth

Associate

Tom obtained his LLB from the University of Cape Town and was admitted to practice in 2006 and has the same right of appearance in the High Court as an Advocate.

Tom obtained a wealth of experience in the practice of Civil Litigation whilst working within a range of diverse Law Firms in Cape Town. For the past several years Tom has specialized in the practice of Matrimonial, Family Law, Maintenance Law and related litigation.

Tom is a FAMAC accredited Family Law Mediator and Facilitator (FAMAC). Tom is also an accredited Collaborative Lawyer (National Association of Collaborative Professionals) and experienced Lay Counsellor and Facilitator (Lifeline).

Tom is an avid swimmer and runner.

Social Responsibility

Elmarie has been fundraising for many years for SEAL COLLEGE, a school for disabled children in Milnerton, Cape Town. In 2014 enough funds were raised to purchase the first bus to transport the children to their outings.

In 2015, to commemorate Women’s Day, we hosted and organized a fun(!)raiser for mothers, daughters and grandmothers. Laughter teacher Kate Squire-Howe was the guest speaker and soon had everyone forget their cares with laughter therapy.

Elmarie has also recently taken on TREVELYN LODGE, a residential facility for disabled adults outside Vredenburg, as a fundraising project. To date, over R800 000 has been raised to assist the facility.

We have a once-off fee for the first consultation which is lower than our usual fee.

At the first consultation we explain our fee structure and discuss how we charge, so that there are no hidden costs or nasty surprises.

How Long Does A Divorce Take To Finalise?

An uncontested divorce takes anything between 6 and 8 weeks.

The finalisation of a contested divorce depends on the number of issues in dispute, the co-operation of the parties and the court roll.

How Much Does A Case Cost?

We charge a fixed lump sum fee for uncontested divorces, ante nuptial contracts and standard wills.

For complicated matters or contested divorces we charge an hourly rate according to the Law Society tariff.

Is My Case Too Small For Your Firm?

Since we provide personal service and since we do our utmost to satisfy our clients so that they will return in future, every case is very important to us.
